How Do You Determine the Best Floor for Your Facility?

Posted on: February 11, 2015

Have you ever wondered what kind of floor is best for your facility? When you are considering a protective floor coating, there are several questions you need to ask yourself before you make a decision.

There are basically 3 types of protective coatings that you want to consider.  The first ones are sealers and hardeners which are applied to your floor when it is new.  A hardener densifies the floor and keeps the floor from dusting.  Sealers that you roll on the new floor will keep the floor from dusting and will help reduce spills and stains from soaking in.  This sealer is a barrier between the floor and what can spill on top of the floor.  Both of these are good for warehouses and storage areas.  With a sealer, you can see the material start to fade when it is time to recoat.  They will need recoated in high traffic areas about once a year.  With a hardener, you can't really tell when it is time to apply more of the material, and the concrete can start to erode before you see it.

The second type of floor coating is epoxy coatings.  The floor must be prepared with a shot blaster or diamond grinder to open the floor so that the epoxy can bond to it.  These materials come in clear and color, and can be applied from thin to thick.  They can be used to fill in bad floors and eroded concrete.  These floors can also be applied in any business.  One can always apply colorful flake to improve the appearance of epoxy floors.  The color can also improve the light in a facility.  Epoxy coatings hold up well and are extremely durable.  In addition, they are easy to clean and texture can be added if needed for slip resistance.

The third type is high performance urethane topcoats.  These floors go on top of epoxy to give them more life and durability.  These are mostly applied on all high traffic aisle ways and fork dock areas.  They also protect the floors from chemicals attacking the epoxy such as solvents, break fluids and many cleaning chemicals.
